PASC24: Synthesizing Applications Through Learning and Computing

PASC24 theme: Synthesizing Applications Through Learning and Computing

The Organizing Team is pleased to announce that preparations are well underway for the PASC24 Conference, which will be held from June 3 – 5, 2024, in Zurich, Switzerland, and chaired by Dr. Kate Evans (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, US) and Prof. Siddhartha Mishra (ETH Zurich, Switzerland).

The PASC Conference focuses on advances in methods, tools, algorithms, and applications to address challenges across all areas of computational science and engineering.

The theme of PASC24 – Synthesizing Applications Through Learning and Computing – emphasizes the growing importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing scientific boundaries, and the early success and enormous promise of hybrid learning and computational methods in tackling formerly intractable problems.

«The next big scientific impacts will unfold as scientific communities transcend domain boundaries to tackle interesting multidisciplinary questions. To deliver on these challenges, there is a pressing need for connected learning and computing paradigms that deliver insightful and explainable solutions. Designing novel and combined computing, learning, AI, and HPC paradigms is essential to address grand challenges at the intersection of multiple scientific domains; whether it is the impact of climate change on energy resources and food production, the economic consequences of pandemics, or the development of novel materials to build new computing platforms. The theme for PASC24 focuses on the grand challenge of combining physics-based simulations with novel machine learning and AI based methods to address interdisciplinary problems in science.»

Submissions open for PASC24

The PASC24 Organizing Team is pleased to announce that submissions for minisymposium, paper, and poster contributions are now open. Submissions should be made via the conference submission portal.

The event is co-sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), SIGHPC, and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) – a unit of ETH Zurich.

PASC24 is an international and interdisciplinary platform for the exchange of knowledge in scientific computing and computational science, with a strong focus on methods, tools, algorithms, application challenges, and novel techniques in the usage of high-performance computing.

The technical program is organized into seven scientific domains:

  • Chemistry and Materials (incl. ceramics, metals, and polymers)
  • Climate, Weather, and Earth Sciences (incl. solid earth dynamics)
  • Applied Social Sciences and Humanities (incl. behavioral, economic, legal, political and business sciences, philosophy, languages, the arts, ethics in computing including climate impact of HPC, biases in machine learning, etc.)
  • Engineering (incl. CFD, computational mechanics, computational engineering and materials, turbulent flow)
  • Life Sciences (incl. biophysics, genomics, bioinformatics, systems biology, neuroscience, and computational biology)
  • Physics (incl. astrophysics, cosmology, plasma modelling, and quantum information sciences)
  • Computational Methods and Applied Mathematics

Expressions of interest for minisymposia (by October 21)

A minisymposium is a two-hour session of four 30-minute slots on a topic of current importance in computational science that showcases research related to domain science, applied mathematics, computer science and software engineering, and is an ideal platform for promoting interdisciplinary communication. Proposals that address aspects emphasizing the theme of PASC24 “Synthesizing Applications Through Learning and Computing” are particularly welcome.

The minisymposium submission for PASC24 is a two-stage process. The first stage is anexpression of interest, which includes a description of the proposed minisymposium (abstract) and suggestions for possible speakers who are experts in their field(s). The expressions of interest will be reviewed by the Minisymposia and Posters Program Committee. A selection of expressions of interest will be invited to submit a full proposal.

The review process will consider the relevance and timeliness of the proposal topic, whether there is gender and geographic balance in the proposed list of speakers, the interdisciplinary nature of the submission, and overall program balance.

The second stage, the full proposal, requires an extended abstract and names of possible speakers and presentation titles for the four 30-minute presentation slots (typically, these slots are 25-minute talks with 5 minutes for questions). The minisymposium organizer is permitted to give one of the four presentations. If desired, the fourth 30-minute slot could be a panel discussion or open discussion forum. Please note that until final decisions are made, submissions should be considered as proposals, and no guarantees should be made by organizers to speakers named on their proposals.

The organizers of a minisymposium take an “active chair” role in their session – that is, they should present a brief overview of the themes of the minisymposium and the state of the art, introduce the speakers and their topics, and facilitate a lively and interactive discussion amongst the speakers and audience throughout the session.

Guidelines for minisymposia and conference participation terms are available here.

Event format

After a fully digital event in 2021, followed by two hybrid conferences, we are pleased to announce that PASC24 will be held as an in-person event at ETH Zurich, HCI Campus Hönggerberg, Switzerland.

Conference contributors whose submissions are accepted for presentation at the conference, should thus plan to travel to Zurich and present their work on-site.

We look very much forward to welcoming you to Zurich in June 2024!
