Scientific Programmer and Climate Data Specialist – Open Position
The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) is one of ETH Zurich’s competence centres. It will become an extradepartmental centre of ETH starting 2021. C2SM is a joint venture between ETH Zurich, MeteoSwiss, Empa, WSL, and Agroscope. As part of the restructuring, we are increasing competencies and are hiring new staff. One central focus of C2SM consists of providing technical support for our new foci areas climate scenarios and climate impacts. Both communities base their research on the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) data used within IPCC and WCRP Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) data. C2SM is envisioned to take part in quality controlling and processing the data for their members and as part of its community projects. In addition, C2SM plans to couple impact models used by C2SM groups more closely to the climate models of the centre.
Job description
C2SM is seeking to appoint a Scientific Programmer and Climate Data Specialist to extend their activities around technical support for C2SM groups and/or projects concerned with climate scenarios and/or impact studies. In particular, she/he will:
- Support short-term requests from the C2SM climate scenarios and impact communities
- Quality control and process CMIP and CORDEX data; interpolate to standard spatial and temporal resolutions for use in impact studies
- Program interfaces for climate impact models to be integrated in the postprocessing chain of climate models such as COSMO and/or ICON
- Prepare and conduct technical education courses for the group members of the C2SM community, in collaboration with the other C2SM programmers
- Prepare, conduct, and postprocess the annual working group meetings, in collaboration with the other C2SM programmers
